Kentucky’s Cable industry delivers entertainment, information and telecommunications services to nearly 800,000 consumers and businesses across the Commonwealth. Through its aggressive re-investment of capital and efforts to deploy new and innovative services to consumers, the Cable industry has fostered the development of a highly competitive market and has been a catalyst for broadband growth.
Cable is the leader in broadband development in the Commonwealth. For most Kentucky households, cable companies provide the fastest broadband speeds, with standard cable broadband speeds ranging from 10 Mbps to 20 Mbps. Many homes in the Kentucky have access to speeds of 50 Mbps or greater.
Cable was also the first to free consumers from the burden of “appointment television” through the wide deployment of DVR’s (Digital Video Recorders) and On Demand programming. Now, many of our customers are able to watch streaming and On Demand video from their iPhones, iPads, and computers, anywhere, anytime.
Additionally, cable has fostered true competition in local telephone service. More than 300,000 Kentucky households receive their home phone service from a Ky Cable member company. Cable operators now make up five of the top 10 residential phone companies in the country.
Through these investment and innovation initiatives, cable has exerted a substantial impact on Kentucky’s economy – creating much-needed jobs for Kentuckians. KY Cable member companies employ nearly 2,800 workers throughout the Commonwealth. Direct and indirect jobs associated with the Cable industry in the Kentucky account for close to 23,000 additional jobs.
The Cable industry’s total annual economic impact on the Commonwealth – $3.4 billion.Learn More
